WESTPORT - The previous four Thanksgiving Day tilts between perennial powerhouses Staples and Greenwich have generated a lot of hype, but produced very little drama.That all changed on Thursday.
Moments after a 32-yard field goal by senior Santiago Cuartas with 21 seconds remaining, Staples blocked a potential game-winning kick by Greenwich as time expired, holding on for a thrilling 30-28 victory before a capacity crowd at Staples Field.Cuartas, who hit the upright on a 30-yard attempt in the third quarter, only added to his legend by tying a state record with his 11th field goal of the season when his team needed it most."You envision getting that chance and to come through in that situation is a dream come true," Cuartas said. "I was upset at myself for missing the first one, but this was redemption I guess. I just didn't want to let anybody down."
The Cardinals trailed 21-7 at halftime but rallied to take a 22-21 lead with 7:57 left.
